John Stewart with his wife Margaret Rodgie and a family of sons, including Andrew and Alexander, was the first settler on the site of Howick village. They were from Methven in Perthshire. the family sailed from Glasgow in the spring of 1822 on the brig 'Jean of Irvine", the first ship owned by Alexander Allan of the famous Allan line of ships. John Stewart selected lot 76 near the rapids at Howick. The Chateauguay Valley Historical Society, volume 18 (1985).

Letter of Grace Irwin says the voyage was 7 weeks and 1 day. Celebrated their centennial 100 years later in the town hall of Howick June 22 1922 with 80 descendants at the gathering. Stewart Tartan and china in evidence.
